What is the purpose of the Frederick Douglass Leadership Seminar?
Frederick Douglass was fiercely determined not to be a victim of his circumstances. Despite being unjustly enslaved, he embraced education and universal natural rights and fought for the equality of all people. In this program, Hillsdale College invites high school students from underserved communities to spend three transformative days on our campus, exploring what it means to lead with courage, resilience, and purpose. Inspired by Frederick Douglass, students will discover how determination and education can empower them to overcome life’s challenges.
During the seminar, students participate in interactive workshops and discussions focused on developing grit, leadership, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. They will experience college life firsthand—sleeping in dorms, dining in the cafeteria, touring campus, and connecting with peers who share similar challenges. Hillsdale faculty, staff, and community leaders serve as mentors, offering guidance and encouragement every step of the way.
Limited to just 20 students, the seminar ensures personal attention, helping each participant recognize their strengths, embrace their potential, and take ownership of their educational journey.
By the end of the seminar, students will leave motivated, confident, and equipped with the skills, mindset, and inspiration to pursue their goals.
Where will the students stay?
Students will stay in single sex dorm rooms on campus at Hillsdale College.
What is the cost?
Thanks to the support of generous donors, admitted participants are responsible for only $100. All other costs are covered for admitted participants. Fee waivers are available to those with demonstrable need.
Does the hotel have WiFi?
Yes, complimentary WiFi is available throughout Hillsdale College’s campus, including dorm rooms.
Can I bring my laptop?
While you are welcome to bring your laptop for personal use, it is not necessary for the program.
What if I can no longer attend?

How will students get around Hillsdale?
Transportation will be provided for any activities that are not within walking distance. Please pack comfortable walking shoes to wear daily.
Who will chaperone students on campus?
Students will be chaperoned by Hillsdale College staff and faculty.
Will I need spending money?
You may wish to bring some extra spending money for souvenirs. All meals and required program materials are provided. You may also need extra money to check your luggage at the airport if you bring more than your carry-on and personal item.
How will students get to and from the airport?
Ground transportation will be provided via shuttle to and from Detroit Metro Airport (DTW). A schedule of shuttle times will be emailed to students a few days prior to the start of the program.
Are baggage fees included?
All flights booked by Hillsdale College will include at least one carry-on and one personal item. If you elect to take additional luggage or a suitcase larger than the airline’s specified carry-on size, you may be charged a fee by the airline. You are responsible for paying this fee roundtrip.
What is the program attire?
Attire for the program is casual, but respectful. We recommend that men bring a suit and women bring a nice dress for meetings with distinguished speakers and our keynote dinner.
Will there be free time?
Free time will be limited.
Who are the speakers?
An agenda will be provided upon arrival and via email. Speakers will consist of Hillsdale College faculty, staff, and distinguished leaders.
What meals are included?
All meals from Tuesday dinner through Saturday breakfast are provided. Additional snacks are available throughout the day as well.
Are scholarships available?
Thanks to the support of generous donors, nearly all costs are covered for admitted participants. Students needing assistance with the $100 registration fee, can email Jolie Ballantyne ([email protected]) with that request.
Can parents attend this program?
No. The program is designed specifically as an academic seminar for high school students.
If I am a rising freshman, can I still apply?
Yes, but preference is given to rising high school juniors and seniors who are considering attending Hillsdale College. The seminar is open to all high school students.
What should I pack?
A checklist will be provided with your admittance letter.
Will students be given a plan of action in case of an emergency?
Yes. Part of the welcome program will include information for students about how to act in case of an emergency, and each will receive an emergency contact card.
