I have a passion for teaching Theology 105- The Western Theological Tradition. I also offer courses on St. Augustine, CS Lewis, Transhumanism, Martin Luther, and Genesis 1-3 in Premodern Christian Interpretation. I joined the faculty at Hillsdale College in 2022 because I love the mission. I want students here to benefit from the same kind of liberal arts education that enriched my own life and helped me find my way into a profession that is much more than a job. Teaching theology is a vocation, a calling, even a ministry.

Biography
Dr. Mattox previously served as Professor (Full) of Theology at Marquette University (2003-2022) and as Research Professor in the Institute for Ecumenical Research (Strasbourg, France; 2000-2003). He is a member of the Academy of Catholic Theology and the International Congress for Luther Research. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the peer reviewed journal Pro Ecclesia: A Journal of Catholic & Evangelical Theology, Deputy Editor of Reformation & Renaissance Review. He was also Associate Editor for the 1.3 million-word Oxford Encyclopedia of Martin Luther (2017).
Mattox’s most recent book is The Ends of a Christian Marriage: A Theological Memoir of Love and Bereavement (forthcoming from Cascade Books in late 2026), which offers a theological reflection on Christian marriage. His previous books include Luther at Leipzig (w/R. J. Serina Jr. and J. Mumme; Brill, 2019), Johannes Oecolampadius: An Exposition of Genesis 1-3 (Marquette, 2013), Changing Churches (w/A.G. Roeber; Eerdmans, 2012), and Defender of the Most Holy Matriarchs (Brill, 2003). Mattox’s research interests include the history of biblical exegesis, the doctrine of creation, and ecumenical theology.
