Hillsdale College Dedicates Phi Sig Pavilion
The pavilion will host performances, classes, and other student activities.
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College dedicated the Phi Sig Pavilion on Oct. 12 during Homecoming Weekend. More than 120 alumni, donors, students, and faculty and staff members attended. The new pavilion, which is named for the Phi Sigma Epsilon fraternity, will hold orientation events, performances, classes, and other student activities.
Phi Sig alumni partnered with Hillsdale College administrators to build the new facility, donating the property for the pavilion and raising more than $100,000. Several other alumni groups also contributed to the project, including the Hillsdale College class of 2022, which selected the pavilion as its senior class gift.
“We are grateful for the generosity of the men of Phi Sigma Epsilon in leaving this beautiful legacy on campus,” said Colleen McGinness, executive director of Alumni Relations.
“The Phi Sigs thought this should stand for all the fraternities who were here, and it does,” said Hillsdale College President Larry P. Arnn. “It’s our business who live today — all of us, everybody here — to keep that alive, for our own good and for the good. We are all brothers here today, and we are all friends.”
The pavilion is located on campus between the Mu Alpha house and the Dow Residence, where the Phi Sigma Epsilon fraternity house once stood.
“Those of you who are here today and who could not make the trip have a common bond with our fraternity,” said Phi Sig alumnus Doug McPherson ’76. “We consider this place to be hallowed ground. To that extent, I believe this is unique among my brothers, and the love and memory of these grounds will be with us forever. We are proud and honored to know that when we leave this earth, we will leave something behind to be remembered by. We’re happy to know that something very dear to us will be used as a place to welcome new students, enjoy social events, and a meeting place for college functions.”
The pavilion includes a warming kitchen, bathrooms, and an indoor conference room and meeting space. Outside features include a patio, barbecue grill, and fireplace.
“We are grateful for the generosity of the men of Phi Sigma Epsilon in leaving this beautiful legacy on campus,” said Colleen McGinness, executive director of Alumni Relations. “By providing a space for gatherings and events, their gift will help foster friendship and community at Hillsdale for years to come.”
