Hillsdale College Shotgun Athlete Jordan Sapp Joins the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit
Sapp will forego his remaining collegiate eligibility to begin training for the 2028 Olympics.
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College shotgun athlete Jordan Sapp is foregoing his remaining collegiate eligibility to join the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, his best shot at becoming Hillsdale’s first shooting sports Olympian.
“An invitation to join the Army Marksmanship Unit is a prestigious, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that athletes train for years to have a shot at,” said shotgun head coach Jordan Hintz. “Jordan has been an outstanding competitor on our team, and it will be exciting to see how he continues to grow with the AMU’s top-notch instruction and the ability to focus his attention solely on training.”

The Army Marksmanship Unit represents the Army in national and international competitions and has taken home 27 Olympic medals. Unit members are all soldiers in the U.S. Army, and new members are only recruited to replace departing ones. Besides representing the U.S. in competitions, the unit also assists in Army recruiting, training, and weapons development. The program generally asks for a commitment of ten years, or two and a half Olympic cycles.
A three-year competitor and two-time ACUI/SCTP All-American at Hillsdale, Sapp helped the Chargers win the 2024 ACUI/SCTP Team National title. He also won an individual national championship in international skeet in 2023 and in combined skeet in 2025. Currently ranked sixth in the nation, Sapp has taken gold, silver, and bronze medals in international competitions as a member of Team USA while attending Hillsdale.
Training did not allow time for Sapp to finish his senior year at Hillsdale, but his early departure will enable him to compete for a spot in the 2028 Olympic games.
Another Hillsdale College shotgun athlete, Ava Downs ’27, recently helped the U.S. take home a bronze medal at the 2025 ISSF World Championship Shotgun near Athens, Greece. She also won gold medals in women’s trap at both the 2025 USA Shooting Junior Olympic Trap National Championship and the 2025 Junior Pan American Games.
