Hillsdale College Hosts 2025 Annual Day of Thanks
Students wrote more than 3,700 thank-you cards to people who have supported them in life and at college.
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College’s Student Activities Board, 1844 Society, and Alumni Office hosted the College’s annual Day of Thanks on Nov. 20. Students came to the Grewcock Student Union throughout the day to write thank-you cards to scholarship donors, family members, professors, friends, and others who have supported them throughout their lives and in their college careers.
“Day of Thanks gives students a simple but meaningful way to show gratitude to those who have supported them in their journeys,” said Colleen McGinness, executive director of alumni relations. “We are grateful for everyone — from donors and professors to family and friends — who contributes to our students’ growth and success. This is a chance to honor them for their roles in our students’ lives.”

To maintain its independence, Hillsdale rejects all forms of federal and state funding, including student grants and loans, and replaces them with private funds. Many donors have never set foot on Hillsdale’s campus but support the type of education the College provides.
More than half of the cost of education for each student is covered, even before financial aid. In addition, 99% of undergraduate students receive some form of financial aid, with the average aid package coming out to more than $26,000 per year.
Students expressed their gratitude on festive cards designed by their peers. In total, students wrote more than 3,700 cards. There are approximately 1,600 undergraduate students enrolled at the College.
“Day of Thanks is one of my favorite events that we put on,” said Ingrid Dornbirer, director of Student Activities. “It is an important opportunity to look around you: to reflect on all you have been given and to express gratitude for the blessings you could never earn. The day is such a gift, and it is a privilege to be a part of it.”
Students gathered the following evening for a Thanksgiving dinner featuring remarks by Hillsdale College President Larry P. Arnn.
