Hillsdale College Announces March Fine Arts Events
Upcoming events include a Symphony Orchestra performance of ‘Peter and the Wolf’ and a Tower Players production of the musical ‘Big Fish.’
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College will hold a variety of fine arts events in March, which are open to members of our local community. Upcoming events include a Symphony Orchestra performance of “Peter and the Wolf” and the Tower Players production of the musical “Big Fish.”
All events are free and open to the public, but some require ticket reservations. To reserve tickets, contact the box office at [email protected] or 517-607-2848.

Sunday, March 1: Sunday Afternoon Organ Mediation
2:30 p.m. | Christ Chapel
Students of Dr. Ryan Kennedy and Dr. Derek Stauff will present a special concert for CCA guests. All are welcome to attend.
Sunday, March 1: Hillary Kuhlmann Senior Violin Recital
2:30 p.m. | Conrad Recital Hall (Howard Music Hall)
Hillary is a student of Dr. Melissa Knecht.
Monday, March 2: Violin Masterclass With Danielle Belen
2-4 p.m. | Conrad Recital Hall (Howard Music Hall)
Danielle Belen, associate professor of violin at The University of Michigan, will present a masterclass to Hillsdale College upper string students. All are welcome to watch and learn.
Tower Players Production: ‘Big Fish’
7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, through Saturday, March 7 | 2 p.m. Sunday, March 8 | Markel Auditorium (Fine Arts Building)
The Hillsdale College Tower Players and John E.N. & Dede Howard Department of Music present the musical “Big Fish,” based on the celebrated novel and acclaimed film. Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman, tells larger-than-life stories that thrill everyone around him, but his son, Will, is determined to find the truth behind his father’s epic tales. “Big Fish” is a heartwarming musical about the importance of family and the power of storytelling. Directed by Tory Matsos, with music direction by James Holleman. Admission is free, but ticket reservations are required. Saturday, March 7: Student Chamber Ensembles

A showcase of various chamber ensembles from the Music Department.
Saturday, March 7: Choral Scholars Concert ‘Sacred Treasures’
7:30 p.m. | Christ Chapel
This Parents Weekend concert will showcase works drawn from the repertory of the world’s great churches and cathedrals. The Choral Scholars offer this performance of carefully curated works from our repertoire in appreciation for the support and dedication of Hillsdale parents and benefactors.
Choral Evensong Services
6 p.m. Sunday, March 8 & 29 | Christ Chapel
Join the Hillsdale College Choral Scholars for a celebration of Choral Evensong. This centuries-old service features scripture, choral anthems, and prayers.
Monday, March 9: Piano Masterclass & Workshop With Nathan Cheung
7 p.m. | Conrad Recital Hall & Room 110 (Howard Music Hall)
Dr. Nathan Cheung, instructor of collaboration at Vanderbilt University Blair School of Music, will present a piano masterclass to Hillsdale College students. All are welcome to watch and learn.
Tuesday, March 10: Nathan Cheung Guest Piano Recital
7:30 p.m. | Conrad Recital Hall (Howard Music Hall)
Dr. Nathan Cheung will perform a concert in Conrad Recital Hall. A San Francisco Bay Area native, Dr. Cheung is celebrated as a concert pianist, composer, improviser, and educator whose performances aim to resonate with listeners from all walks of life.
Thursday, March 12: Samuel Jarzab Senior Clarinet Recital

Samuel is a student of Dr. Andrew Sprung.
Thursday, March 26: Alexandra Laird Senior Violin Recital

Alexandra is a student of Dr. Melissa Knecht.

Symphony Orchestra Performances
8 p.m. Saturday, March 28 | 3 p.m. Sunday, March 29 | Markel Auditorium (Fine Arts Building)
Saturday’s performance will feature selected winners from the 2026 Student Concerto/Aria Competition: Ellia He, violin; Ashlyn Linton, piano; and Samuel Jarzab, clarinet. Sunday’s performance will feature Prokofiev’s classic “Peter and the Wolf” and Andrew Maxfield’s companion piece “What About the Duck?” narrated by Victoria Matsos and Dr. Christopher Matsos. Both performances will feature various film scores from “Up,” “Ratatouille,” and “How to Train Your Dragon.” James A. Holleman, music director. Tuesday, March 31: Voice Masterclass With Freda Herseth
11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. & 2-3:30 p.m. | McNamara Rehearsal Hall (Howard Music Hall)
Freda Herseth, mezzo-soprano and professor of music (voice) and Arthur F. Thurnau Professor at The University of Michigan, will present a masterclass to Hillsdale College students. She has taught at the Brancaleoni Music Festival in Italy, Brevard Music Festival, Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Eastman School of Music. All are welcome to watch and learn.
