Hillsdale College Sophomore Presents Cancer Research at National Conference
Kaiser Himmelberg’s team found a way to improve production of a promising anti-cancer agent.
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College student Kaiser Himmelberg ’28, a chemistry major from Polaris, Montana, gave a research presentation at the American Chemical Society’s national conference in Atlanta, Georgia in March. Himmelberg’s research team found a way to improve production of a promising anti-cancer agent.
“To present at this conference is a high honor for an undergraduate, especially one so young,” said Courtney Meyet, chair and professor of chemistry. “Hands-on research is an important part of Hillsdale’s approach to the sciences, and it is exciting to see what our students accomplish.”

At the conference, which marked the 150th anniversary of the American Chemical Society, Himmelberg presented on research he worked on last summer as part of the Horizon-Broadening Isotope Production Pipeline Opportunities program at Texas A&M’s Cyclotron Institute.
“I am deeply grateful to connect with leading minds in nuclear research through my work with the HIPPO program, an experience that opened doors to share our findings at the Fukushima Medical University in Japan and American Chemical Society meeting in Atlanta,” Himmelberg said. “This incredible opportunity was made possible through connections from Hillsdale College, with special thanks to Dr. Lauren McIntosh ’10.”

Through their research, Himmelberg’s team discovered a way to improve production of Astatine-211, which has shown promise for use in targeted alpha therapy, a way to treat cancer while minimizing damage to healthy tissue.
Hillsdale College offers chemistry as both a major and a minor. Students conduct research alongside faculty and have the opportunity to be published as undergraduates. Required research, maximized lab time, and small classes prepare students for graduate work, teaching, and work in various scientific fields. Hillsdale’s chemistry program is approved by the American Chemical Society Committee on Professional Training, and students have the opportunity to join Hillsdale’s nationally recognized ACS chapter.
