Hillsdale College Remembers Trustee Emeritus Charles S. McIntyre III
McIntyre passed away on July 13 at the age of 98.
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College is saddened by the passing of Trustee Emeritus Charles S. McIntyre III, who served on the College’s Board of Trustees from 1975-2025. He passed away on July 13 at the age of 98.
“Charles McIntyre was a longtime friend of the College and an invaluable member of the Board of Trustees for 50 years,” said Rich Péwé, chief administrative officer of Hillsdale College. “We are grateful for his loyalty, leadership, friendship, and service, and our prayers are with his family.”

McIntyre joined the Hillsdale College Board of Trustees in 1975 and served in that capacity until 2025, when he was granted emeritus status. During his time on the Board, he served on the Buildings and Grounds Committee (chairman 2000-2010), Investment Committee (chairman 2000-2010), Finance Committee, Prudential Committee, and Nominating Committee.
McIntyre attended the University of Michigan and the Coast Guard Academy before working as a service manager at the Monroe Auto Equipment Company, which became part of Tenneco, Inc., in 1977. He served as president of the company from 1973-1978. In 1979, he became an account representative for the Ohio Company, a regional brokerage firm. In 1983, he semi-retired to become a full-time volunteer for several non-profit organizations.
McIntyre served on the board of directors for the Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn, Michigan; Roselawn Cemetery in Monroe, Michigan; and Hibiscus Children’s Shelter in Stuart, Florida. He was the executive director of the B.D. and Jane McIntyre Foundation. He and his wife Irma played a significant leadership role in the establishment of Hillsdale Academy and were lifetime members of the College’s President’s Club. They had three daughters, five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
