Hillsdale College Remembers Trustee Emeritus Lawrence O. Selhorst
Selhorst passed away on Aug. 8 at the age of 93.
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College is saddened by the passing of Trustee Emeritus Lawrence O. Selhorst, who served on the College’s Board of Trustees from 1991-2015. He passed away on Aug. 8 at the age of 93.
“Larry Selhorst was a judicious and affable board member, and we are grateful for his years of faithful service to the College,” said Rich Péwé, chief administrative officer of Hillsdale College. “His vision, drive, and deep care for those around him will be deeply missed, and our prayers are with his family.”

Selhorst joined the Hillsdale College Board of Trustees in 1991 and served in that capacity until 2015, when he was granted emeritus status. During his time on the Board, he served on the Buildings and Grounds Committee and Outreach Committee.
Selhorst attended John Carroll University and began his career in the steel industry. He founded American Spring Wire Corporation in 1968, which he led for decades and continued to advise until his death. He pioneered worldwide supply chains and advocated for the American wire industry, including as the founder of the American Wire Products Association.
Selhorst was past chairman of both Meridia Health Systems in Cleveland and Meridia’s Suburban Community Hospital, as well as Russell, Burdsall and Ward Corporation. He also served on the boards of trustees for the Lincoln Electric Company and Park-Ohio Corporation.
He and his wife Martha had five children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
