Disability Accommodations

Hillsdale College

Commitment to Accessibility and Student Support

Hillsdale College is committed to supporting its students in their pursuit of academic excellence, strength of character, and overall well-being. In keeping with this commitment, the College provides reasonable accommodations to qualified students with documented disabilities to support equal access to academic programs, campus resources, and student life.

When a student requests accommodation for a documented disability, the College will engage in an interactive process with the student to evaluate eligibility and determine any reasonable accommodations that may be appropriate.   Accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis through this interactive process between the student and College. While the College is committed to providing appropriate support, accommodations must be reasonable, supported by documentation, and must not fundamentally alter academic standards for essential program elements.

It is important to understand that disability accommodations at the college level differ significantly from those at the high school level. While IEPs or 504 Plans from high school may offer helpful background, they do not automatically transfer or guarantee accommodations at the college level. Further, in college, students are expected to initiate and manage their own accommodations, including providing required documentation, and communicating their needs. This reflects the broader transition to independence and personal responsibility in the college environment.

Dietary Accommodations

Because the College has a residential requirement that includes participation in a campus meal plan, students with medically necessary dietary restrictions may request accommodations by completing the Dietary Accommodations Request Form. Once submitted, the College will review the request in coordination with dining services to determine reasonable accommodations that support the student’s health and well-being while maintaining the integrity of the campus community dining experience and community standards.

The Accommodations Process

To request academic or dietary accommodations, please contact Aaron Petersen, Dean of Men, or Rebekah Bollen, Dean of Women, to start the process and complete the appropriate Accommodations Request Form and provide all required documentation.

In some cases, a student’s need for accommodations may change over time. Open communication is essential for ensuring that accommodations remain appropriate and effective. If you have concerns about your accommodations or believe your request has not been suitably addressed, please contact the appropriate dean for additional information about adjustments or the available appeal procedures.
