To create relationships that will encourage a love of reading and writing in elementary school students and to facilitate literacy and composition skills through a pen-pal system of exchanging journals weekly.
About
Journal Buddies is a college volunteering program that connects college students with elementary school children at Pittsford Elementary and Will-Carleton Elementary to enhance literacy and composition skills while building meaningful relationships. Volunteers dedicate one hour each week to journaling activities with their buddies, focusing on writing, sharing ideas, and improving core literacy skills. At the end of the year, the program culminates in a celebratory ice cream party, highlighting the academic progress and connections made. This initiative positively impacts the community by fostering consistent practice in reading and writing, improving classroom environments through collaborative projects, and providing children with inspiring role models. By participating in Journal Buddies, college students help young learners develop critical literacy and composition abilities while strengthening community relationships.
