Dr. David Stewart, Professor of History

The most striking feature of Dr. Stewart’s office is how full it is. From the floor to the ceiling, books fill the many-tiered shelves. Biographies, textbooks, and all things history decorate the professor’s workspace, interrupted only by the presence of one golden couch which sits opposite from Dr. Stewart’s chair. The atmosphere Stewart has created makes students feel invited and relaxed, while simultaneously putting them in the mindset of the professor’s passion and chosen craft: history.

Percussion Ensemble Performs a Striking Concert

Led by Stacey Jones, ten musicians—students ranging from freshmen to fifth-year seniors—performed a variety of pieces by some of the biggest names in modern percussion composition. From the serene melodic interplay of a marimba version of Francisco Tarrega’s Recuerdos de la Alhambra, to the thunderous rhythmic tension of Nebojsa Zivkovic’s Uneven Souls, the concert featured works running the gamut of the musical spectrum.

Foreign Policy and a Liberal Arts Education

On Monday, February 17th, Mitchell Muncy from the Alexander Hamilton Society gave a lecture entitled “The Inhumanity of American Foreign Policy.” In this lecture, Mr. Muncy critiqued the approach of International Relation programs and the lack of focus on the humanities throughout the nation’s educational institutions.

At last, a beer tasting class is being offered at Hillsdale College! I’m not in the Honors Program, but when I saw that an honors seminar was being offered called “Beer: Science, Styles, Sampling,” I knew I had to get into it. As soon as the honors classes were opened to non-honors students, I snagged the last open spot in the class.

Students Who Serve: A look at students entering the military

A senior history major, Audrey Gray, can’t officially accept a commission to join the Marine Corps until she graduates Hillsdale with her degree, but she’s finished nearly all the paperwork and is ready to sign the last form the moment she graduates. Mitchell Irmer, a junior physics major, has already sworn in and committed to six years with the Navy’s nuclear program starting a month after he graduates.

Professor Lewis Butler

Professor Lewis Butler is in his second year as an adjunct professor in Hillsdale’s Economics department. A recent graduate of the college, Professor Butler returned to academia when he received a call from department head Dr. Gary Wolfram in the summer of 2012.

Simpson Residents Hear from the President

Wednesday, March 19th marked the first time that Dr. Arnn, President of Hillsdale College, has spoken at Simpson Dormitory since the 2000-2001 school year. He was received with applause by a sizeable group of men that night, which was followed by something seldom heard of in any other higher learning institution: A leader taking time to counsel and encourage his students on what it means to be a man in the midst of a society that blurs the lines.

Professor Knecht’s New Art Exhibit

From taking my art classes, I knew the Hillsdale art department had loads of talent. I’ve learned a lot of techniques and styles from my professors, but I rarely think of them as artists outside of the classroom bubble. All that changed when I saw Professor Sam Knecht’s new exhibit, From the Studio and Beyond, in the Daughtrey Gallery on campus.
