Hometown Hillsdale: Scott Phillips, ’77

Not every “Hometown Hillsdale” alum grows up in Hillsdale’s very own Broadlawn on Hillsdale Street. Scott Phillips, ’77, is the youngest son of former Hillsdale College President J. Donald Phillips. Hillsdale will always be his home.

Staying the Course: Ed Swanson a Standout in the Hillsdale Community

Ed Swanson, ’60, learned to play golf while working at a local golf course. He was offered a scholarship to play for the Chargers, and earned medalist honors. He still keeps tabs on the Chargers golf team and is glad he has made Hillsdale his home.

The Old College Try: Former Baseball Captain Don Smith Carves Out a Career in Education

Don Smith, ’59, wasn’t sure what he wanted to do after graduating from nearby Homer (Michigan) High School. He eventually became a baseball asset, earning all-conference and team MVP honors as a first baseman and also did some pitching for the Dales, who were members of the MIAA.

North, to Alaska: From Farm Life to Hillsdale, Wendell Shiffler Makes Alaska His Home

Wendell Shiffler, ’65, grew up on a farm in the southern part of Hillsdale County. That farm-life work ethic served him well at Hillsdale, where he ran track and cross country and was able to work on campus to pay for his tuition. Wendell is now an avid outdoorsman who enjoys his Alaskan way of life.

Traveling Man: Michael Farrell Pursues His Love of Economics Worldwide

Michael Farrell, ’17, is a man on the move. In fact, in his quest to combine his passion for economics with his professional career aspirations, he has traveled the world and continues to do so.

Small-town living, with an emphasis on community and giving back, has made calling Hillsdale home a joy to Jan Brodbeck and and her husband, former Board of Trustees Chairman William “Bill” Brodbeck, ’66.

From Alaska to Florida they came. The annual 50/60-Year Reunion event again brought Hillsdale College alumni back to campus to celebrate their anniversaries.

After Nikki Wustman, ’07, played a basketball career that had her make the all-conference team three times, including first-team honors in 2005-2006, Wustman said she is grateful for her Hillsdale experience.

Hometown Hillsdale: Dylan Strehle, ’19

It was the people, the College’s core virtues, and his twin brother that led Dylan Strehle, ’19, to Hillsdale College. Now, Dylan calls Hillsdale home with his wife, Abby, ’19, saying even if they win the lottery, they’re going to stick around Hillsdale for as long as they can.

Kelsey Gomberg’s Career Combines Teaching and Her Love of Swimming

Kelsey Gomberg, ’10, knew she wanted to swim in college. Gomberg swam the 100- and 200-meter butterfly events and was named a tri-captain during her senior year. Having fun while working hard is a theme that Gomberg has carried into her professional life as a senior training facilitator at the Big Blue Swim School in the Chicago area.
