Why I Chose Hillsdale: Anne Hotz, ’18

For a long time, I thought my Hillsdale story wasn’t much of a story at all. Since middle school I had been familiar with the College and its mission due to a number of family friends who had attended. The more closely I looked into Hillsdale, the more I was intrigued.

Dr. Jeffrey Lehman identifies Augustine as one of his favorite authors because Augustine “focuses upon the most important things for our journey in this life—pursuing the truth and embracing love.” And Lehman believes that the liberal arts help students to approach those most important things.

The Danger of the Liberal Arts

“There is some danger in the liberal arts,” Dr. Fennell told us in that first lecture. “If you wanted to stay where you’re at, you should have become a dental hygienist.” I didn’t tell him that in my childhood, entering the world of cavities and dental chasms had been my modest aspiration. But something other than my idea of common sense propelled me into the astonishing world of Dr. Fennell’s classroom, and into an uncommon store of wisdom.

My four years at Hillsdale College taught me the importance of living a life in pursuit of what is good, true, and beautiful. Countless classes, lectures, and conversations reinforced these ideas by preserving them among a haven of students and professors.
