Hillsdale College Announces April Fine Arts Events
Upcoming events include a Big Band concert, a student art exhibit, and Handel’s ‘Messiah.’
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College is pleased to announce another exciting month of plays, concerts, and other fine arts events open to members of our local community.

Senior Art Exhibits
Raegan Coupland, Joy Hanes, and Rachel Moeller will have their senior art show hanging in the Daughtrey Gallery in the Fine Arts Building from April 4 through April 8. The opening reception will be at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 4, in the Fine Arts Building.
Cecelia Cummins, Katherine Lannon, and Abigail Davis will have their senior art show hanging in the Daughtrey Gallery in the Fine Arts Building from April 11 through April 15. The opening reception will be at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 11, in the Fine Arts Building.

Shakespeare Society Presents Shakespeare in the Arb: ‘Love’s Labours Lost’

Saturday, April 5: Hillsdale Percussion Ensemble

This year’s concert will showcase world folk music with a focus on the music of Ghana and the Latin Americas. We welcome guest artists Mark Stone, world percussion, and Patrick Fitzgibbons, steel pan.

Hillsdale College music faculty members Daniel Kuehler, Brad Blackham, and Taylor Flowers will celebrate the music and 150th anniversary of the birth of French composer Maurice Ravel (1875-1937).
April 11 & 12: Hillsdale College Big Band Concert

Hillsdale College welcomes back the great Vincent DiMartino, trumpet, for a swinging concert with the Hillsdale College Big Band.
April 11-13: Tower Dancers Concert

The Tower Dancers’ 22nd Annual Spring Concert features choreography by students, faculty, and guest artists. Highlights include a Billy Joel tribute, a dance about the Wild West, and variations from the Classical Ballet “Paquita,” along with works in ballet, contemporary, and modern dance, all showcasing the talent of our student performers.Saturday, April 12: Joy String Quartet

The John E. N. and Dede Howard Department of Music offers a select number of students the opportunity to perform on world-class instruments from the Hough Collection, as members of the Joy String Quartet. A gift from David and Bonnie Joy Hough, these exceptional instruments are pieces of historical significance crafted by Italian master luthiers from Cremona and Turin during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.
Sunday, April 13: Chapel Choir Passiontide Sacred Concert
6 p.m. | Christ Chapel
The Chapel Choir will perform “The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John” by Henrich Schütz (1585 – 1672) to mark Palm Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week. This choral setting of the Gospel account of Jesus’ suffering and death is a traditional part of the annual commemoration of the central Christian mystery of the redemption throughout the Christian West. The service will include readings and hymns meditating on the final, pivotal events of Christ’s life. Written for the royal court of Dresden in the 1660s, the St. John Passion is among the first to invest the choral settings of the “crowd” with dramatic realism. The Chapel Choir will also perform music from Bach’s cantata BWV 12, “Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen,” and Mendelssohn’s “Jesu, meine Freude.” Timothy McDonnell, conductor.

April 25 & 27: Handel’s ‘Messiah’

A Hillsdale College Choir, Chamber Choir, and Orchestra tradition presented every four years since December 2000. This coming year, the seventh cycle, the choirs and orchestra will present two performances during Eastertide, featuring different student soloists for each of the two performances. Ticket reservations are required.
Saturday, April 26: Playwriting Competition Staged Readings
7:30 p.m. | Markel Auditorium
The Department of Theatre aims to reinvigorate American drama with a new, biennial playwriting competition for Hillsdale students. Join us for staged readings of the finalists’ plays and be the first to congratulate the inaugural winner! This year, students wrote one-act plays based on a quote from Frederick Douglass in his address to Hillsdale in 1863: “There is no such thing as new truth; error might be old or new, but truth is as old as the universe.”
Spring Student Art Exhibition
