Hillsdale College Announces Creative Writing Awards Recipients
Students submitted poetry and prose for a chance to win scholarship money.
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College announced the winners of its annual creative writing competition during the Parents Weekend Honors Assembly on March 1. The winners will receive scholarship awards.
“It is a wonderful way of encouraging students to write.”
“The English Department’s annual competition gives students of all majors a chance to write whatever is on their souls to write,” said Kelly Scott Franklin, associate professor of English. “Students share their lyric poems, short stories, one-act plays, and more. It is a wonderful way of encouraging students to write, and provides an opportunity for us to recognize the skill and creativity in our student body.”
Five students were selected as award recipients:
- Henry Ahrabi received the Ambler Literary Prize for his poem “Work Out Your Own Salvation.”
- Campbell Collins received the Barnes Award for Excellence in Poetry for her poem “June 2018.”
- Alexandra Comus received the Margaret Weymouth Jackson Award in Creative Writing for her poem “Μαινάδες” (“Maenads”).
- Elizabeth Hoppel received the Carlotta & Alvin Ewing English Award for her short story “No Time for Sparrows.”
- Andrew Winter received the Dana & Elinor Kies “Rose Award” for his short story “One-Point-Two Inches from Eighty Feet.”
Students submitted their entries under pseudonyms. Franklin, Associate Professor of English Benedict Whalen, and Assistant Professor of English Christina Lambert selected the winners.
