Hillsdale College Announces November Fine Arts Events
Upcoming events include a concert by the Harry James Orchestra, a sacred music concert by the Hillsdale College Chapel Choir, and the Tower Players production of “Ajax” by Sophocles.
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College is pleased to announce another exciting month of plays, concerts, and other fine arts events open to members of our local community.

Saturday, Nov. 2: Choir and Chamber Choir Concert

The choirs will present a wide variety of choral music selected for a special Parents Weekend performance. James A. Holleman, Music Director
Sundays: Choral Evensong Chapel Services
Nov. 3, 17, and 24, 6:00 p.m. | Christ Chapel
Join the Hillsdale College Chapel Choir for a celebration of Choral Evensong. This centuries-old service features scripture, choral anthems, and prayers.
Friday, Nov. 8, and Sunday, Nov. 10: Chapel Choir Concert
Sacred Splendor of the 18th and 19th Centuries — Masterworks by Schubert and Jommelli
Friday, 7:30 p.m. | Sunday, 2:30 p.m. | Christ Chapel
Christ Chapel Choir performs one of Schubert’s most cherished choral masterpieces, the “Mass in G.” Written by a 17-year-old Wunderkind at the cusp of the Romantic Age, this beloved work brims with passages of choral vigor and poignant lyricism. Jommelli’s “Requiem” is enjoying newfound popularity after centuries of neglect. This work exemplifies the Baroque genius for expressive impact as we commemorate the memory of our beloved dead in November.
Tuesday, Nov. 12: Guest Artist Recital by Daniel Washington
7:30 p.m. | Christ Chapel
Bass-baritone Daniel Washington, Professor of Music at the University of Michigan, will present a recital in collaboration with Taylor Flowers of the Hillsdale College music faculty. Washington has performed at prestigious opera houses worldwide in roles such as Jochanaan in “Salome” and Porgy in “Porgy and Bess,” alongside performances with leading orchestras like the Berlin Philharmonic and Montreal Symphony. Washington is an expert on African-American classical music and spirituals, with a deep commitment to diversity in the arts.
Tower Players Production: “Ajax” by Sophocles
Wednesday, Nov. 13 through Saturday, November 16, 7:30 p.m. | Sunday, Nov. 17, 2:00 p.m. | Markel Auditorium
In Sophocles’ ancient tragedy, Ajax, a hero of the Trojan War, is brought low by both the gods and his own actions. What happens when a hero falls out of favor with the gods? How can vanity and pride crush one the greatest warriors in the Greek army? What happens when a sense of injustice and frustration leads Ajax to attack his own brothers-in-arms? The Tower Players explore these questions and more as they stage Sophocles’ timeless classic. Directed by James M. Brandon.
Saturday, Nov. 16: The Harry James Orchestra
8 p.m. | Searle Center
One of the original bands of the swing era, The Harry James Orchestra returns to campus for an evening of great music and dancing. Reception begins at 7 p.m. Fred Radke, Music Director. For reservations, visit hillsdale.edu/harryjames2024.
