Hillsdale College Displays Photography Show ‘Presence, Beauty, and the Sacred’
The photographs document a six-month family journey across the United States, Mexico, and Europe.
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College is displaying an exhibition of photographs taken by Todd Mack, chair and associate professor of Spanish, on a six-month family journey across the United States, Mexico, and Europe. The show, titled “Presence, Beauty, and the Sacred: Photography of the Camino de Santiago,” is free and open to the public.
“I chose these forty photographs to display here because I believe they tell the arc of our journey,” Mack said. “Each has a story to tell, even if that story can be hard to tease out.”

The photographs document a six-month, 25,000-mile family journey across the United States, Mexico, and Europe, which culminated in hiking the 500-mile Camino de Santiago.
The show explores themes of presence, beauty, and the sacred through photographs taken along the way — from the American Southwest and Mexico to the pilgrimage roads of northern Spain.
“I’ve tried using words to describe what this journey meant to us as a family, what it cost us in sweat and tears,” Mack said. “I constantly find myself totally inadequate to the task. Now I think it’s time to let the images do some of that speaking for me.”

The show will be on display in the Daughtrey Art Gallery in the Fine Arts Building until August 1. The gallery is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Appointments to see the exhibit outside of those hours can be made by emailing Mack at [email protected]. The week of June 22-26 will be by appointment only.
