Hillsdale College Freshmen Win Debate Championship
Jonathan Evans and Noah Woo won the Tournament and Conference of Scholars in Phoenix over Easter weekend.
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College debate students Jonathan Evans ’28 and Noah Woo ’28 won first place in the Tournament and Conference of Scholars hosted by Collegiate Advocacy, Research, and Debate at Arizona State University, Tempe, over Easter weekend.
“Hillsdale trains students to be clear thinkers and great communicators,” said Professor of Rhetoric Kirstin Kiledal. “It is rewarding to see our students excel in debate even as freshmen, and I am excited to see what they accomplish in the future.”

Evans and Woo won the Junior Varsity division of the national culminating event with a record of 4-0 in preliminary rounds and 3-0 in the final round. Woo also earned individual speaker awards in all three categories: Evidence and Analysis, Communication, and Community.
During the 2024-2025 academic year, there were 17 active members on the Hillsdale College debate team. Team members placed in multiple competitions, and several students won individual speaker awards.
