Hillsdale College Graduate Student Receives Weaver Fellowship
Vincent D’Angelo received a $15,000 graduate fellowship from the Intercollegiate Studies Institute.
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College graduate student Vincent D’Angelo has received a $15,000 Weaver Fellowship from the Intercollegiate Studies Institute to pursue his doctorate in politics at Hillsdale’s Van Andel Graduate School of Statesmanship. Undergraduate alumna Kody Richards ’25 also received a Weaver Fellowship for this academic year.
“Hillsdale’s graduate program aims to educate students for public service and education, whether that is in higher education, politics, journalism, or elsewhere,” said Graduate Dean Ronald J. Pestritto. “It is rewarding to see Vincent receive this prestigious fellowship to help him attain that goal.”

D’Angelo received his B.A. in political science and philosophy from Wabash College and his M.A. in politics from Hillsdale’s Van Andel Graduate School of Statesmanship, where he is now pursuing his Ph.D. He has served as the graduate teaching apprentice for Khalil Habib and the graduate research assistant for Joseph Postell, both members of Hillsdale’s politics faculty. He has also managed the Richard M. Weaver Collection at Hillsdale’s Mossey Library. His academic research interests are focused on the intersection of political philosophy and political theology.
“I look forward to teaching at the college and university level after completing my doctorate here at Hillsdale,” D’Angelo said. “I think that in many ways, winning the School of Statesmanship’s first Weaver Fellowship is a sign that there is a recognition of the contributions that our faculty — and increasingly, our students — are making to the academy.”
The Intercollegiate Studies Institute’s Weaver Fellowship provides funding for graduate students who intend to teach at the college level in the humanities or social sciences. Each year, the program awards up to 15 graduate fellowships ranging from $5,000 to $15,000.

Richard M. Weaver, the fellowship’s namesake, was a professor of English at the University of Chicago and the author of “Ideas Have Consequences” and “The Ethics of Rhetoric.” His scholarship explored culture, language, tradition, and community.
“Dr. Weaver was an exceptional scholar whose interdisciplinary work put him at the forefront of not only political philosophy but also literary criticism,” D’Angelo said. “My time here at Hillsdale has been so exceptional because the faculty here understand this connection between the two disciplines, between how stories and language affect our political worldviews and how politics likewise shapes our stories.”
Kody Richards ’25 also received a Weaver Fellowship for the coming academic year. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts in History and Politics from Hillsdale, she is now a second-year Ph.D. student in political science at the University of Notre Dame, concentrating in constitutional studies and political theory.
Hillsdale College’s past Weaver Fellows include Wilfred McClay, professor of history at Hillsdale, and Matthew Spalding, the College’s vice president for Washington operations.
