Hillsdale College Honors David Gaebler With Daugherty Teaching Award
Assistant professor of mathematics recognized at Fall Convocation
Hillsdale, Mich. – Hillsdale College awarded the Daugherty Award for Teaching Excellence to assistant professor of mathematics David Gaebler during the College’s Fall Convocation on November 15, 2018.
“Dr. Gaebler is dedicated to teaching,” said David Whalen, Hillsdale College provost. “It is a pleasure to recognize his contributions in the classroom, and we look forward to his continued work with the students and faculty at Hillsdale.”
Gaebler joined the Hillsdale College faculty in 2013 after completing his doctorate in mathematics at the University of Iowa. He completed his bachelor’s degree in mathematics at Harvey Mudd College and has a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of California, Los Angeles. He also has a master’s degree in biblical theology from Westminster Seminary California.
Gaebler has earned several awards recognizing his teaching and academic excellence. He was awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship from 2006-2009. At the University of Iowa, Dr. Gaebler received the University of Iowa Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award, the Bor-Luh Lin Award for Outstanding Thesis in Mathematics, and the D.C. Spriestersbach Prize for Outstanding Dissertation in Mathematics, Engineering and the Physical Sciences. His research has been published in the Journal of Functional Analysis.

Named for elementary and secondary school teacher Emily Daugherty, the Daugherty Award for Teaching Excellence honors those who have exemplified her commitment to growing knowledge, wisdom and virtue in students. The honor has been awarded to 22 other Hillsdale professors. Hallmarks of teaching excellence include mastery of subject matter, dedication to profession and craft, excellent communication skills, sensitivity to student understanding of subject matter, academic advising at an exceptional level, display of academic rigor and demand for excellence and recognition of duty to help students develop responsible freedom of thought and choice.
