Hillsdale College Hosts Novelist Hernan Diaz
Diaz spoke to students, faculty, staff, and community members as part of Hillsdale’s Visiting Writers Program.
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College’s Visiting Writers Program hosted Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Hernan Diaz on Nov. 17 & 18 for a Q&A, reading, and lecture.
“Hernan Diaz is a great modern novelist,” said Dutton Kearney, associate professor of English. “It is important for the aspiring creative writers on campus to interact with novelists who have succeeded in the modern world while drawing on the greatness of our literary tradition.”

Diaz hosted an informal Q&A for students, faculty, and staff. He also held two public events: a reading from his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “Trust” and a lecture on literature, its production, and its study.
Hernan Diaz is the author of three books, including his novel “Trust,” which won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction. He has received numerous awards, and his stories and essays have appeared in The Paris Review, Harper’s, and The Atlantic among others. Born in Argentina, he received his Ph.D. from New York University.
Hillsdale’s Visiting Writers Program brings nationally and internationally renowned novelists, professors, and poets to campus, bringing the past into a dynamic conversation with the present by exposing students to writers both steeped in the classic literary tradition and actively contributing to the contemporary conversation.
