Hillsdale College Hosts Photography Exhibition on the Transcontinental Railroad
The exhibition marks the 150th anniversary of the beginning of America’s railroad era.
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College is hosting a traveling exhibition from the Center for Railroad Photography & Art’s special project “After Promontory: 150 Years of Transcontinental Railroading.” The exhibition is housed in Hillsdale’s Daughtrey Art Gallery until October 6.
“Hillsdale College encourages members of the community to visit this special exhibition,” said Julio Suarez, chairman and associate professor of art. “Art is an important way to commemorate history, and ‘After Promontory’ does this through photography in an enjoyable and thought-provoking way.”

The Center for Railroad Photography & Art launched “After Promontory” to mark the 150th anniversary of the beginning of America’s railroad era. The project examines the effect of the transcontinental railroads on the American West through a book, conference, and traveling exhibitions, including the one currently on display at Hillsdale College.
The exhibition includes both historic and contemporary photography that reveals how people with different perspectives viewed the impact and legacy of the transcontinental railroads that transformed the American West.
