Hillsdale College Professors Receive Awards from the Heritage Foundation

Associate Professor of History Mark Moyar and Professor of Philosophy Nathan Schlueter received Freedom and Opportunity Academic Prizes.

HILLSDALE, Mich. — Two Hillsdale College faculty members, Professor of Philosophy Nathan Schlueter and Associate Professor of History Mark Moyar, received Freedom and Opportunity Academic Prizes from the Heritage Foundation.

“Dr. Schlueter and Dr. Moyar have both contributed significantly to the College as well as to their respective fields,” said Hillsdale College Provost Christopher VanOrman. “It is a joy to see their work honored.”

The prizes are awarded to faculty whose work relates to the ideas of freedom, opportunity, and traditional American values.

Winners received prizes of $15,000 or $20,000 for research and education. Prize recipients will also participate in a Summer Colloquium and Workshop in Washington, D.C. with Heritage Foundation scholars and leading academics.

Mark Moyar, William P. Harris Chair in Military History, teaches military history and serves as the director of the Center for Military History and Strategy at Hillsdale College. Moyar is the author of eight books on military history, diplomatic history, grand strategy, leadership, and international development. He is currently writing the final volume in his trilogy on the Vietnam War, which challenges prevailing orthodoxies and presents the war as a just and winnable cause undermined by political decisions.

Professor of Philosophy Nathan Schlueter teaches philosophy and serves as the director of the Pre-Law Program at Hillsdale College. He has published on a wide range of topics, from marriage and family to education and political theory. He is the author of Hillsdale’s popular online course “Introduction to Western Philosophy.” Schlueter has also been an energetic defender of the principles of the American Founding against various postliberal critiques. Currently, he is working on a book, “Romantic Realism: The Politics and Ethics of the Moral Imagination.”
