Hillsdale College Students Intern and Study in Washington, D.C., as Part of Washington-Hillsdale Internship Program
WHIP students are interning for the White House, the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, and more.
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Seventeen Hillsdale College students are in the nation’s capital for the fall semester as a part of the College’s Washington-Hillsdale Internship Program. Through the program, students participate in full-time internships while taking evening classes at Hillsdale’s D.C. campus.
“WHIP challenges students to grow both professionally and academically while exploring all that the nation’s capital has to offer,” said Dorothy Roland, Hillsdale in D.C.’s undergraduate program coordinator. “It lets them see firsthand how the things they study at Hillsdale apply in the real world.”
This semester, WHIP students are interning for the White House, the Office of the Second Lady, and the Office of Management and Budget, the House Judiciary Committee, and the Office of the Speaker of the House, and well as the offices of Sen. Angus King and Reps. Michael Baumgartner and Josh Brecheen. Outside of government, students are interning at the American Enterprise Institute, MAHA Action, Advancing American Freedom, the Heritage Foundation, the Claremont Institute, the Susan B. Anthony List, and the National Center on Sexual Exploitation.
During their time in D.C., students will shoot at the NRA Gun Range and receive tours of the monuments, Mount Vernon, and Gettysburg. They will also attend a Nationals baseball game, a production of C.S. Lewis’s “Prince Caspian,” Hillsdale in D.C.’s annual Christmas party, and the American-Austrian Cultural Society’s Viennese Christmas Ball.
While on WHIP, students take two or three evening classes taught by both Hillsdale College faculty members and distinguished fellows who live and work in Washington, D.C., including Mollie Hemingway, senior journalism fellow at Hillsdale College and editor-in-chief of The Federalist. WHIP offers classes in law, politics, economics, journalism, history, and English.
Juniors and seniors of all majors can participate in the program. This year’s WHIP class included students majoring in English, politics, history, French, political economy, religion, and philosophy.
