Hillsdale College Students Perform Opera Workshop “Highlights in Harmony”
Students performed selections from operas and musicals by Mozart, Donizetti, Bizet, Rodgers, and more.
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College student vocalists presented excerpts from various operas on Oct. 25 and 26 in Hillsdale’s eighth annual Opera Workshop. The performances, titled “Highlights in Harmony,” featured music by Donizetti, Mozart, Bizet, Rodgers, and more. Students, faculty, staff, and members of the community attended.
“We are so proud of the work our students put into this year’s Opera Workshop,” said Voice Coordinator Emily Douglass. “We were thrilled by the audience’s support. Each night, we sang to a full house and were rewarded with a standing ovation.”
Douglass and Instructor of Voice Kristi Matson co-directed the performances, which featured 15 scenes in English, French, German, and Italian. Artist/Teacher of Music Daniel Kuehler, Staff Accompanist Tom Ryskamp, and students Ethan Renstrom and Henry Hansen served as accompanists.
“Our students explored a diverse range of repertoire, from musical theater to operetta and opera, performing in Italian, French, and German.” Douglass said. “Each scene was chosen specifically to suit the voice type and talents of each singer.”
Auditions were open to all Hillsdale College students. Twenty-five student singers were selected to perform, including senior Eva Lindsay.
“I love doing the opera workshop because most often classical vocal music is performed solo at Hillsdale,” Lindsay said. “With the opera workshop, I get to share something I love not only with an audience, but also with other singers.”
