Hillsdale College Students Win National Broadcasting Awards
Hillsdale College students placed in four categories in the College Broadcasters, Inc., National Student Production Awards.
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale students took home four national awards, including two first-place finishes, in the College Broadcasters, Inc., National Student Production Awards. The winners were announced at the National Student Media Convention in Seattle.
“I’m very proud of our students for their well-deserved recognition,” said Scot Bertram, General Manager at WRFH/Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. “These awards not only reflect Hillsdale’s high standards, but these students’ perseverance and dedication to their craft.”

Senior Lauren Smyth took first place in Best Newscast or Sportscast for her show Lauren Smyth News on WRFH. Logan Washburn ’24, junior Ty Ruddy, senior Alex Deimel, senior Erin Osborne, and Jane Kitchen won first in Best Documentary Long Form for “The Prison Games,” a film they produced in Hillsdale’s documentary filmmaking course.
Seniors Gavin Listro, Bella Dix, and Ally Hall won second in Best Regularly Scheduled Entertainment Program for their WRFH show I’ve Got Aux, and junior Evan Mick won fourth in Best Sports Reporting for his WRFH segment “The Life of a Kicker.”
Hillsdale College students have been named CBI finalists every year since 2018 and taken home seven national first-place awards.
CBI is a member-driven organization serving students and advisers of college and high school electronic media outlets, according to its website.
