Hillsdale College Students Win Seven Awards from the Michigan Press Association
The awards recognized work done for The Collegian, Hillsdale’s student newspaper.
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College students earned seven awards from the Michigan Press Association recognizing their work for The Collegian, Hillsdale’s student newspaper. The awards recognized work done in the 2023-2024 school year, and winners were announced at the Michigan Press Association Convention in May.
“The Collegian gives our journalism students hands-on experience with every part of the process, from reporting and writing to editing and design,” said John J. Miller, director of Hillsdale’s Dow Journalism Program. “They produce outstanding content, and it is exciting to see their work recognized.”

Hillsdale students competed against other weekly student newspapers in Michigan, entering the awards last fall. Students earned seven awards in four categories:
Feature Story
- Ally Hall: 2nd place (“Professor’s Band Debuts Album in Italy”)
- Caroline Kurt: 3rd place (“Celebrating Easter in the Eternal City”)
Sports News/Feature
- Alex Deimel: 2nd place (“Jack Gohlke Upsets March Madness”)
- Sarah Katherine Sisk: 3rd place (Petersen brothers wrestling feature)
Front Page Design
- Isaac Green: 1st place (9/21/23)
Non-Front Page Design
- Michael Bachmann: 1st place (1/25/24 Features)
- Thomas McKenna: 2nd place (2/22/24 Sports)
Michaela Estruth ’25 also earned a first-place award at the regional level from the Society of Professional Journalists. Her story “Students Visit ‘Pearl of Africa,’ Fight for Change Through Faith and Fellowship,” won first place in Feature Writing for a school under 10,000 students.
Hillsdale journalism alumni have gone on to the Wall Street Journal, Fox News, ESPN, National Review, Politico, Nashville Public Radio, and many more.
