Hillsdale College Hosts Premiere of Online Course “Understanding Capitalism”

HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College hosted a premiere of its new online course “Understanding Capitalism” in Sarasota, Florida, on March 20. The event featured a screening of the first episode and remarks by Charles Steele, associate professor of economics.

“This is a first-of-its kind special event for Online Courses,” said Jeremiah Regan, executive director of online learning. “We are grateful to the many students and supporters who make these courses possible, and it was exciting to celebrate the launch of this important course together.”
Steele, the instructor for the course, spoke on “Overregulation and the Market.”
“The economist Ludwig von Mises observed there’s a kind of logic to interventionism. It often snowballs,” Steele said. “Why is this? Well bureaucratic interventions into the economy often have undesirable consequences. It’s quite common to then blame these on the free market and call for another regulation to fix the problem. The new regulation will cause further undesirable consequences and incentives for yet more regulation, and Mises warns us that unless this process is cut short and reversed it will eventually lead us to de facto central planning.”
Steele’s talk was followed by a reception and dinner.
Regan then offered remarks introducing a premiere of the first lecture of the course, “Human Nature and the Cost of Choice.” The event concluded with hospitality.
A new lecture will be released to the general public each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday beginning on Friday, March 21.
