Michael Ward Accepts Distinguished Fellowship, Leads C.S. Lewis Seminar

HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College welcomes noted theologian and C.S. Lewis scholar Michael Ward as a Distinguished Fellow of the college.

Hillsdale College Senior Receives Barry Foundation Scholarship

Hillsdale College Senior Nick West became the first Hillsdale student to win the Barry Foundation Scholarship and enroll at the University of Oxford with the scholarship, which grants full funding for its recipients to earn graduate degrees at Oxford. After majoring in mathematics at Hillsdale College, West said he plans to pursue two master’s degrees, one in applied mathematics.

Hillsdale College Hosts Hometown Lecture Series in Mobile, Alabama

HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College hosted a Hometown Lecture Series luncheon and speech in Mobile, Alabama, on March 29. Ronald J. Pestritto, dean of the Van Andel Graduate School of Statesmanship at Hillsdale College, addressed guests on “The Pandemic, the Bureaucracy, and the Future of American Politics.”

Hillsdale College Choirs Perform Together in Christ Chapel

Hillsdale, Mich. — Hillsdale College faculty and staff, students, friends of the College, and the surrounding community joined together in Christ Chapel for the Hillsdale College Choir and Chamber Choir’s annual spring concert on April 4. The performance featured works by Beethoven, Vaughan Williams, Boulanger, Ola Gjeilo, Shawn Kirchner, and more.

Hillsdale College Shotgun Team Competes in Division II at ACUI National Championship

HILLSDALE, Mich. — The Charger shotgun team competed in Division II in the annual Association of College Unions International (ACUI) Collegiate Clay Target Championships in San Antonio from March 18-27. The event was the largest collegiate shotgun competition to date, featuring more than 1,000 athletes from 95 schools. Hillsdale’s 11-person team took sixth place out of 21 Division II teams, beating the University of Alabama and Clemson.

Ph.D. Candidates Deliver Dissertations

HILLSDALE, Mich. — Two doctoral students from The Van Andel Graduate School of Statesmanship at Hillsdale College presented their dissertation research in public presentations this month. Sarah Akey and Casey Wheatland had successfully defended their dissertations in front of faculty panels, and both were awarded dissertation honors.

Hillsdale College Hosts 23rd Annual Athletic Hall of Fame Induction

HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College congratulated new inductees to the Athletic Hall of Fame at its 23rd annual Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet in the Searle Center on March 26, 2022. This year’s inductees included alumni Bob Mallendick (’66), Jason Stomps (’10), and the 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991 softball teams.

AWC Family Foundation Lecture Series at Hillsdale in D.C. Addresses “Spiraling Violence in Chicago: Causes and Solutions”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Author and journalist Matt Rosenberg delivered a lecture titled “Spiraling Violence in Chicago: Causes and Solutions” at Hillsdale College’s Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship on February 28. The event was part of the AWC Family Foundation Lecture series. Faculty and media attended both the lecture and the reception that followed.

Hillsdale GOAL Program Hosts Healthcare Letter Writing Event

HILLSDALE, MICH. — The Hospital Volunteering Great Opportunities for Assistance and Leadership (GOAL) Program hosted a Healthcare Letter Writing Event the week of March 21 during lunch hours in the Grewcock Student Union. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., students wrote letters thanking healthcare workers for their service to the community. Letters will be delivered to staff at Hillsdale Hospital.

HILLSDALE, Mich. — Michael Ward, noted theologian and C.S. Lewis expert, delivered the third lecture in the Drummond Lecture Series at Christ Chapel on March 24. His talk, titled “To See or Not to See: C.S. Lewis and the Objectivity of Value,” addressed Lewis’s arguments concerning moral truth in “The Abolition of Man.”

Fourth Freshman Foundation Lecture Addresses Freedom in Relation to Liberal Arts Education

HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College hosted its fourth Freshman Foundation Lecture and luncheon at the Searle Center on March 22. Paul Moreno, dean of social sciences and professor of history, offered a lecture to the freshman class on freedom. Moreno discussed how freedom relates to the liberal arts education by training free, self-governing individuals.
