Naumann began his academic career teaching German at Saint Croix High School in St. Paul, Minnesota, after graduating from Martin Luther College in 2001. He continued his education at Western Michigan University, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in tourism and travel and German. Naumann went on to Michigan State University where he received his master’s and doctorate in German studies.
The theme of this year’s Edward Everett Oratory Contest, hosted annually by the Office of the Provost and Department of Rhetoric and Public Address, was “How to Be a Good Neighbor in a Divided World.” Five finalists presented their speeches to a panel of judges that included Hillsdale College President Larry P. Arnn, entrepreneur Don Tocco, and Buckley School of Communication instructor Jana Daley. Cash prizes were awarded to the top three competitors.
Highlighting Christ Chapel’s classical style, Wall Street Journal architectural critic Michael J. Lewis praised the structure, saying, “In every respect—in construction, ornament and especially its siting—Christ Chapel sparkles, and shows that the rules of classical architecture are no more an impediment to imaginative design than the rules of grammar are to imaginative speech.”
The hearing, led by Chairman James P. McGovern (D-MA) and Ranking Member Tom Cole (R-OK), examined how the roles of the modern legislative and executive branches of federal government have diverged from the founders’ vision as outlined in the U.S. Constitution.
Hillsdale College today announced the release of seven books during the 2019-20 school year, written or edited by professors in the history, classics, and English departments. These publications cover a variety of topics, including creationism, religion in America, Western civilization, and more.
“Because students across the nation are learning through online forums, the College has prepared this online mini-class and its resources especially for high school students,” said Kyle Murnen, director of online courses at Hillsdale College. “Dr. McClay and Dr. Arnn provide great insight into our nation’s past in a thought-provoking way that we can all benefit from.”
“The programming our students produce is among the best in the country, and I’m proud to see it recognized with these awards,” said Scot Bertram, general manager of WRFH/Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. “Stefan and Matt both have consistently created important and high-quality content, and they have set the bar high for future student broadcasters at WRFH.”
Tharp has led the Charger men’s basketball team for 13 seasons, garnering more wins than any other basketball coach in the College’s history. With an overall record at 230-133, he has coached teams to two NCAA Division II tournament appearances. Since joining the G-MAC, Tharp’s teams have finished each season as one of the conference’s top three teams. The Chargers finished the 2019-20 season with the regular-season conference championship title and an overall record of 19-9.
Hillsdale College’s CCA is the sponsor of one of the largest college lecture series in America. In 2019, the Florida legislature passed Florida House Bill 807. The bill requires state test specifications and instructional materials for certain civics courses to be reviewed by the Commissioner of Education in consultation with external education entities. Hillsdale College was among the selected group of education consultants. As such, Hillsdale College offered feedback on the state of Florida’s current civics test specifications. Florida is expected to review the civics standards themselves by the end of 2020.
